VALENCIA, Aug 26 (SW) - Valencia CF have won the opening match of the
Spanish Primera Division season, beating Real Betis 2-1 at Mestalla
stadium late on Saturday.
Starting the match at the traditional time of 10pm CET, it took 34
minutes for the first goal of the season to be scored. The honor went
to former Real Madrid, Monaco and Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes,
who joined 'the Bats' this summer.
However, the score was levelled in the 52nd minute, when a Xisco header beat Caņizares for 1-1.
But the win would go to Valencia as Raul Albiol restored the lead
twenty minutes later, taking advantage of a loose ball in the penalty
area.
Valencia are the first leaders in 'La Liga', but this should change
after Sunday's fixtures. Real Madrid face Villarreal at Santiago
Bernabeu stadium, while Deportivo host Zaragoza in A Coruņa. Reigning
champions FC Barcelona visit Celta de Vigo on Monday.
