ISTANBUL, Aug 23 (SW) - Dynamo Kiev made a return to the Champions
League group stage on Wednesday after earning a 5-3 aggregate triumph
of Fenerbahçe, thanks to a Maksim Shatskikh brace in the 2-2 second-leg
draw.
After missing out on the group stage a season ago, Dynamo held a 3-1
lead from the first leg, with Fenerbahçe carrying a potentially deadly
away goal.
The Ukrainians quickly took care of that, though, as Shatskikh got an
away goal of his own just five minutes into the match, putting Dynamo
4-1 in front on aggregate and leaving the Turks needing four goals to
advance.
The hosts got one of those goals back in the 36th minute as Ghana
captain Stephen Appiah beat Olexander Shovkovskiy in the Dynamo goal,
but Uzbekistan's Shatskikh grabbed his second just six minutes later to
put Fenerbahçe in a massive hole.
Again needing four goals without reply to move on to the group stage,
Kerim Zengin put into the net for the home side in the 57th minute to
give the crowd hopes of a dream comeback, but they would get no closer.
Dynamo Kiev move onto the group stage, joining fellow Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk who beat Legia in Poland.
