David Villa celebrates his goal against Salzburg (Action Images)
VALENCIA, Aug 22 (SW) - Valencia CF beat Salzburg 3-0 to overcome their
first-leg defeat and secure a spot in the group phase of this year's
Champions League.
Salzburg had won the first leg 1-0 but could not compete with Valencia's strength at Mestalla in the second.
The deadlock was broken after only eleven minutes. New signing Fernando
Morientes took advantage of bad clearance by the goalkeeper and scored
for 1-0.
And after thirty minutes, the Spaniards got a second. Salzburg's
Carboni - not to be confused by Valencia team manager Amedeo Carboni -
handled the ball and Villa scored from the penalty, be it in the
rebound.
Salzburg still only needed one goal to move on to the group phase but
the Austrians did not have the strength to achieve that requirement.
Instead, David Silve added a third goal in the 92nd minute to set the final score to 3-0.
