MOSCOW, Aug 16 (SW) - Russia were victorious over Latvia in Guus
Hiddink's debut as manager as both nations prepared for Euro 2008
qualifying. Tournament co-hosts Austria and Switzerland endured
different fates, as well.
Russia - Latvia 1-0
Guus Hiddink's first match in charge of Russia was a success, although
it took a goal at the death to see his side do away with Latvia in
Moscow.
The Latvians rarely threatened Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, but
they squandered many opportunities before debutant Pavel Pogrebnyak
struck home first-time in stoppage time to seal the win.
Russia open their qualifying campaign against Croatia on 6 September while Latvia look forward to a match against Sweden.
Liechtenstein - Switzerland 0-3
Euro 2008 host Switzerland opened their international season in style as they romped to victory over Liechtenstein in Vaduz.
Borussia Dortmund striker Alexander Frei was the hero of the game,
opening the scoring for the Swiss in the 11th minute, and then making
it 2-0 to the visitors just after the second-half restart from the
penalty spot.
Xavier Margairaz then got his first Switzerland goal in the 65th minute
to wrap up the victory for Switzerland, who automatically qualify for
Euro 2008. Liechtenstein open qualifying against Spain on 2 September.
