League One side Crewe dumped Premiership Wigan out of the Carling
Cup in the second round thanks to goals from Rodney Jack and Nicky
Maynard.
Last year's beaten finalists Wigan were stunned when
Jack opened the scoring just before half-time, thumping in Luke
Varney's cross.
And Maynard rounded off the win when he converted another Varney cross in the 90th minute.
Paul Scharner and Emile Heskey failed to convert Wigan's best chances.
The Latics, with five changes to the side that drew 2-2 at Everton at the weekend, shaded the opening period.
But they were generally restricted to long-range efforts
and never convinced in their search for an equaliser after the
interval.
However, Alex goalkeeper Ben Williams made some fine
saves when called upon - particularly when he tipped Heskey's late
effort round the post.
Earlier, Scharner had headed straight at Williams when he could have done better.
